Book Week 2022 – “Dreaming With Your Eyes Open”

In celebration of Book Week 2022, we are sharing the magic of reading by holding reading sessions of Kristin Weidenbach’s “Tom the Outback Mailman” on Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st of August.

We’ll be running two half hour story-time sessions, at 11am and 1:30pm, in front of Tom Kruse’s famous mail truck. This fantastic vehicle is housed in the Sunburnt Country exhibition which tells some real iconic stories about Australian Motoring History.

This year’s Book Week theme is “Dreaming with Your Eyes Open” and if there was one person who was able to make their dreams a reality, it was Tom. He had to use his quick wits and imagination to solve many problems whilst tackling the Birdsville Track. His truck could often break down and he would have to dream up ways to use odd bits and pieces to fix it. He also faced challenges like getting stranded on one side of flooded creeks where he would have to patiently wait before he could deliver his mail to Birdsville or return home after a long stint away.

Bring your kids to the National Motor Museum to celebrate Book Week, where they can learn more about this icon of Australian motoring.

Each child who participates in the sessions shall go in the draw to win a copy of the “Tom the Outback Mailman” book. Copies of the book will be available both in store and through our online gift shop. For adult readers interested in learning more about Tom, we also have Mailman of the Birdsville Track: The Story of Tom Kruse, by Kristin Weidenbach, available for purchase.
