Top 10 Car Movies: Road Trip!

There are so many amazing films out there and it is incredibly hard to narrow them down to a list of 10. We tried, we failed, so here is the FIRST list of many top 10 motoring films: Road Trip Films!

Thelma and Louise (1991)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iBFmKlO4BY

According to the trailer, this is a story about Thelma and Louise going fishing.

I mean, sure? But really it’s a story about two women on a road trip who *intend* to go fishing but end up murdering a man (a very bad man) and flee to Mexico.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWGqGHMO294

Starring classic 80s comedy legends John Candy and Steve Martin, this movie is the perfect one to be watching once you’ve put the kids to bed.

Sit down, open a bottle of wine, and have an adult laugh at Martin’s Neal trying to get home for Thanksgiving with the help of a stranger, Candy’s Del, after his flight gets cancelled.

The Long, Long Trailer (1953)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Qbm-T_OSa4

Don’t we all just love Lucy?

This is about two newlyweds who decide living in a trailer will be the perfect way to start their lives together. Spoiler alert: it’s not, and it is definitely not advised.

Travel back in time for a night and watch this 50s film. Mistakes are made, accidents are had and hilarity ensues.

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWBsQArUkQY

A biopic about a man who sets out on a motorcycle road trip with his friend across South America.

That man? Ernesto Guevara who went on to be known as Che Guevara – the iconic Marxist guerrilla leader.

It’s quite the story and quite the watch – definitely one to add to your list!

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvwVkllXT80

A classic road trip film about a family who packs up and hits the road in support of their daughter’s dream to win the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. A heroin-addicted Grandpa doubles as her coach, while her Mum, Dad, suicidal gay uncle and brother, who no longer talks, come along for the ride as her support team.

It’s real, it’s dark and it’s pretty damn funny.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEJnMQG9ev8

The latest film in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic series about Max, an ex-police officer/drifter man, who in this flick, teams up with a rebel warrior to overthrow a tyrant controlling all the water supply.

Now don’t get upset about us including this one over the others, Fury Road is here because it comes under the ‘road trip film’ theme. Obviously watch the Mel Gibson movies in order, and end with this Tom Hardy/Charlize Theron special.

Last Cab to Darwin (2015)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hypCdpjTMDI

A Heart-warming Australian story about a man who finds out he’s terminally ill and travels to Darwin to be euthanized.

Have the tissues ready because this cast full of Australian royalty, and Brian Taylor, is going to make you ugly cry.

National Lampoons Vacation (1983)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHThGmVfE3A

“Holiday RoooooOOOOOoooooOOOOaadd” What a classic. What a movie. What a SONG.

The one where Griswold’s just want to go to Walley World, only to find after an incredibly hellish road trip that it’s closed. There are many more after that and if you have time (which we know you do – don’t we all?), we highly recommend you sitting down and binge-watching them all.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGWWeourHUg

There is no way we could morally do a ‘best road trip movies’ list without including this classic.

The story of two drag queens and a transsexual who are travelling from Sydney to Alice Springs to perform their cabaret show at the Lasseters Hotel Casino Resort. You can most likely imagine the types of trials and tribulations the trio come across on their journey, but you should give it a watch and experience it for real anyway.

If not just for the story, then also for the KILLER SOUNDTRACK.

Rubber (2010)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONlyG2b0fWo

Rubber is a film seen on top 10 lists everywhere, usually lists talking about the top 10 worst films, but it’s a top ten list none the less.

Rubber is the captivating tale of a murderous tyre who goes on a trip killing the good people of California. Sound ridiculous? It is. Ridiculously great.
