From Workhorse to Stallion: the ute in Australia


The story goes that the first ute was an Australian invention created in 1933 (and released by Ford in 1934). It was designed by Ford designer Lew Bandt following a letter from a farmer's wife asking 'Would Ford build for me a vehicle: the front is the Coupe, to suit my need of taking the family to Church on Sunday; the back is the Roadster Utility box, so I can take the pigs to town on Monday.'
