110 Years of the RAA

Temporary exhibition

2013 marks the 110th anniversary of the RAA in South Australia and to celebrate a special display is now on at the National Motor Museum. It features historic vehicles such as the Ford Thames service vehicle used from 1957, retro uniforms, memorabilia such as badges and brochures, and fabulous images documenting the history of the RAA. Hurry to Birdwood and discover the history of this South Australian icon.

Holden Hurricane

1920s Garage

Permanent exhibition

Come and see what the interior of a typical mechanical workshop looked like in the 1920s. Museum volunteers have created a replica 1920s Garage using tin signs, petrol pumps, original tools, advertising images, a fire extinguisher, and even a vintage typewriter and small office. The main feature is a rolling Ford Model T chassis, designed to show the various components of a chassis and running gear and how they fit together.

Eddie Perkins: A Redex Legend

Permanent exhibition

Eddie Perkins (1920-2006) won the 1956 Mobilgas Around Australia Trial in a Volkswagen Beetle with his brother Lance as co-driver, helping to put this European car on the Australian map. He was the patriarch of this well-known motorsport family: his son Larry won multiple Bathurst 1000 races, and grandson Jack is a well-known V8 Supercar driver. This exhibition showcases some of his prizes for the 1956 rally win.

Although motor vehicles produce only a small proportion of Australia’s greenhouse omissions, they are one source that individuals can influence directly. Many consumers today are seeking more environmental transport options, and vehicle manufacturers are spruiking their green credentials. Shades of Green explored the impact of motor vehicles on the environment.

Most of the Australian population lives on the edges of the continent. The outback is viewed as a huge, inhospitable and dangerous place by many. But by others, both now and in the past, it has been seen as a challenge and an adventure in the waiting. This exhibition explored some of the stories of people who have ventured away from cities and into the unknown.
