‘Dig’ into Maritime history, get a ‘licence’ at Birdwood and weave some magic in Kintore Avenue

Dig it! Archaeology for active kids - Monday to Friday, 30 Sep to 11 Oct 2013

Dig it! Build it! Find it! This holiday it’s like Indiana Jones is on a crusade at the SA Maritime Museum with this great archaeological activity. Kids will ‘dig’ around to uncover lost relics from an unknown past with the help of an Archaeologist, ‘build’ a picture of maritime life by piecing together remnants of artefacts and ‘find’ their way around the museum to earn a reward. So dust off your explorer’s kit and get ready for adventure! GREAT HOLIDAY VALUE: This activity is included with museum entry. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults can check out our new exhibition Windjammers: The Last Grain Races which is on until the end of November. It’s about the men and women who sailed on the last commercial sailing ships or ‘windjammers’ from SA to the UK. SA Maritime Museum: 126 Lipson Street, Port Adelaide. Admission charges are $10 adults, $8 conc., $5 child or $25 for a family(2 adults + up to 5 children).  For further information call the Museum on 8207 6255.

Weave your way round the Migration Museum and bridge the generation gap

Weave your way: This holiday the Migration Museum will be getting crafty with the kids and having a weaving ‘come & try’ session. Create your own bookmark or weave a small mat and discover the ins and outs of a craft that threads through many cultures across the globe. Fun for kids between 5 and 15, it’s FREE and available all holidays. Children must be accompanied by an adult and please note that this activity is not supervised but is very simple for all to enjoy.

Discover Bosnia & Herzegovina: Grown-ups can also discover the rich culture of this South East European nation through an exhibition in our Forum Gallery staged by the Bosnian Seniors Group ‘The Optimists’. There’s also Refugees and Australia (1972-2012) which looks at the hard facts behind the headlines of the last 40 years on this issue. Plus it’s your last chance to see the exhibition Crossing Country: about the life and times of John McDouall Stuart (closes late October).

All in the family: From 8 - 11 October, 10.30-12.30 grandparents and their grandkids are invited to this free activity as part of the Every Generation Festival. Explore the Migration Museum, bake something for morning tea and bridge generations in one go. It’s a great way to learn new skills, discover old traditions and meet interesting people.
