Australia had its own experience of the 1950s characterised by a strong economy, high employment rates, increased standards of living, and the dream of owning a home in suburbia with the latest labour-saving appliances. ‘Pop’ music and television were also introduced to Australia in this decade. Australia’s own car manufacturer, Holden, released their first car in November 1948, and the make was popular throughout the decade as car ownership continued to increase.
This display features a 1958 FC Holden Station Sedan and a 1958 Vespa. The energetic spirit of the era is captured in the large advertisement for the iconic swimwear brand Jantzen.
Check out the 1957 Seeburg K200 jukebox, which plays the number one hits of the decade – and there’s not much rock and roll! You can also try out our drive-in experience. Don’t forget to test your road knowledge by completing the 1950s drivers licence test. Did you pass?
